CASCINA MARTESANA

SOCIAL HOUSING IN MILANO

The Project Area is located beside the Martesana River in the North of Milan. Different public and private green areas, with different characters, are present along the Martesana. Our site stands in a position where, by creating a public green area, like a park, it could become a key element to generate a connection between all these green bodies, and generate a big green system along the river. What began with a social housing building project, ended up being a landscape and residential project.

Our main concept for the creation of a park was based on four main elements: a green border, near the railways, to mitigate the noise; a forest concept, in the area the urban fabric, where also housing was the “end” of the city and SI encrusted placed; city border, to emphasize the placing housing; and open green space in the middle of the park, besides the river and Martesana path. The shaping of our residential buildings follows the concept of the zoning of the park. The Forest Building has the verticality of the trees, and the different layers and heights of the branches and leaves as the main concept. While the City Limit Building has a bar shape that emphasizes the edge of the urban fabric, taking the dimensions of the adjacent block. The character of the buildings, of expandability and flexibility, will allow the occupancy of the typologies to change over time. The two smaller buildings on the other side of the river, are based on the existing situation of that area. The program inside the residential buildings was carefully studied before hand, with the creation of a Project brief, describing the guidelines of the Project. The project is orientated to house mainly students, young workers, couples, and small families.
