IN BETWEEN
REHABILITATION OF INUJIMA ISLAND
The proposal presented show the idea of rehabilitation of the island Inujima in Japan. The complex analysis has shown that the island is divided between different zones, and they are not connected well enough to make the island live. Our vision was to connect all these parts and make a pathway with different functions throughout the way. Therefore the island was divided between 5 parts: The Beginning (Info point); The Loop; the Public place with living spaces; Workshop areas; The Bridge (connecting the main part of the island to the Quarry site)
The project deals with the historical background of the Island of Inujima, situated in the South West of Japan and how it was used as a natural resource for industrial purposes. It was an area for copper refining and a quarry area. Our proposition implements another way to explore the island, navigate through the island, and more importantly to give people the chance to encounter the natural conditions of the island to appreciate and question the inherent qualities of the site.
The poor work circumstance on the island, the fast-growing economy and the requirement for organizations to continue development on the island lead us to create workspaces through the island. The small group of people( mainly art-oriented) will be sent there to stay temporary. So, through the island created different workspaces to adjust the need of people to be there. Besides the program of workspaces, the path will allow visitors to enjoy the island in an unexpected way, as the path cuts through the island and makes different turning points through very characteristic parts of the island.
The concept “in between” was done intentionally, as it cuts in between verticality and horizontality. As it makes people feel the sense of part of nature, as opposed to being the easy traveller on the island.
The proposal is an effort to come up with a positive plan for the journey for how we can evolve and rehabilitate the island of Inujima. We join the tour proposal to the words of Kazuyo Sejima, as the importance of touching the landscape as the main importance for architectural setting in the island.
